Momentum: Let The Good Happen

I love the experience of being a fan when momentum is on my team’s side. All it takes is one big play and then they cannot fail. Their eyes are locked in and every move they make is smooth and successful. It is clear to all watching they are going to create victory.

You can observe momentum at work in sports, the arts, and a colleague’s professional progression. But it’s much harder to observe when the momentum is within us.

Many of us have been trained to notice what is wrong, what needs to be fixed, or what problem needs to be solved. This may have kept us safe as a child, or it may keep us employed in careers that require precision. I’m personally working really hard to rewire my brain on this; for years I was rewarded professionally for “seeing trouble coming” and solving problems before they happened.

But that tendency eventually stops serving us.

Do you know what the head coach of a team experiencing the flow of momentum doesn’t do? They do not call a timeout. They let it keep rolling and simply cheer from the sidelines.

They LET IT HAPPEN.

When we don't notice the good within ourselves, we accidentally stop doing it. Over time, we can lose the ability to notice what is right and good and even enjoyable.

Missing the good that is building personally and professionally prevents me from enjoying the moment and leaning in and letting the good build. Thankfully I work with a leadership coach that sees, names and celebrates the good. When my coach notices my progress, I begin to see it too. And, I remember their encouragement between sessions which makes it more and more natural to see, notice and build on what is working.

My home is at the top of a hill, and sometimes my son’s basketball goes rogue into the road. It picks up speed, whizzing down the curb. It might hit a piece of garbage or a rock and change course momentarily, but then it’s right back to whizzing down the hill. That’s how momentum works.

What area of your life could you simply allow to roll?

What if, the next time you miss a workout, a journal entry, a pause, a work opportunity, or another commitment you’ve made to your own growth you simply saw it as a blip in your momentum, like a rock in the road, and let yourself get back to rolling forward?

Like believing Felix Felicis is in your pumpkin juice (IYKYK), momentum can propel us forward into fulfillment and satisfaction we never knew was possible.

If you find yourself in the pattern of progressing and then stopping, you’re not alone. This is where coaching changes the game. A coach helps you identify those areas of growth and dismantle the old voices that pull you back to feeling stuck and help you to let the good happen.

Like a fan cheering on their winning team, a coach sees and celebrates your momentum and encourages you to just keep going until you are able to see and celebrate yourself!
